Gay White has been teaching yoga and an innovative blend of dance and yoga called Yoga Movement since 1989. After studying at the Yoga Room in Berkeley for many years, she is now the Director and on the faculty of the Yoga Room Advanced Studies Program. Gay founded the Yoga Garden Dance Company in 1992 and continues to give classes, workshops, retreats and performances. Her choreography has been featured at the Yoga Journal's International Yoga Convention both in 1998 and in 1999 and she was inspired by her studies with Geeta Iyengar in Pune, India in 1997.

Gay's retreats, workshops and classes offer a gentle yet deeply challenging approach to practice as well as providing a quiet context for contemplation.

Yoga Movement Weekend Seminars with Gay White

Winter/Spring 2010

Yoga Movement is an innovative blend of dance and yoga, a dynamic and invigorating practice, and a chance to enjoy group movement. These seminars are for experienced yoga practitioners, and/or teachers and offer Yoga Movement asana classes, creative work, and teaching practice. You are eligible if you are a graduate of The Yoga Room ASP, have a yoga teaching certificate, or with permission of the teacher.

There are ten seminars, five hours on Saturday and three hours on Sunday, once a month, for ten months. The course begins in January and finishes in November 2010.

Uncover, deepen, and enliven the energetic connections to the source of natural movement.

Feb 13 & 14 ~ Moving with the Breath
With gentle breathing and yoga as an inner focus for timing, slow down and enjoy moving with a group.

Mar 13 & 14 ~ Art of Sequencing
Arrange asanas in ways that enhance efficient use of energy and periods of unbroken awareness.

May 15 & 16 ~ Creative Approaches
Move into the present moment, clear out old movement patterns, and free up creative inspiration.

Jun 19 & 20 ~ Teaching Movement
Explore how people move and learn differently in order to encourage freedom of movement.

July 17 & 18 ~ Contemplative Performance
Realize performance as communication, ritual, and a distillation of experience .

Aug 14 & 15 ~ Observing and Recalling Movement
Enhance kinesthetic memory, perceive movement in the body and in space, and see the whole.

Sep 18 & 19 ~ Transitions: Flowing Through Asanas
Moving in slow motion with conscious breathing, build inner heat and deep strength.

Oct 23 & 24 ~ Phrasing and Dynamic Practice
With rhythm, tempo, gravity, and stillness, build dynamic movement phrases for choreography and teaching.

Nov 20 & 21 ~ Subtle Body Movement
Experience the surprise of improvisation and initiate movement from the inner body.

There are also opportunities to accumulate assisting, teaching, and asana hours at weekend retreats and small classes at Gay’s home studio by appointment.

About Gay:  Gay White has practiced dance composition and improvisation, tai chi, and yoga and has studied yoga at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India. She has been making dances since 1975, and in 1992 founded the Yoga Garden Dancers, a group who perform original choreography using asanas.

Gay teaches yoga and an innovative blend of dance and yoga called Yoga Movement. She is currently Director of the Yoga Room and is on the faculty of the Yoga Room Advanced Studies Program. She also teaches classes, workshops, and retreats.

The Yoga Room

2530 San Pablo Ave, Suite D. We are in the northwest corner of the building we share with the Sierra Club, Ecology Center, Audubon Society, and Centro-Latino. Enter the lobby and proceed down the hallway to the door marked Suite D, The Yoga Room. Pass through this doorway and follow the corridor to the right until you reach our beautiful, quiet new studio. There is an anteroom where you can leave your shoes and clothing, but please bring your valuables into the practice space.

Please do not park in the building parking lot. Parking is available on San Pablo, Blake Street, or Tenth.
